SpotOn, a leading restaurant technology provider, today launched SpotOn en Español, the most comprehensive in-product Spanish offering for U.S. restaurant staff. The new feature lets restaurant workers use the timeclock, POS platform, kitchen display system (KDS), and back-office dashboard in English or Spanish.
Quick summary: SpotOn en Español is a staff-facing Spanish-language option across SpotOn’s timeclock, POS, KDS, and back-office dashboard, meeting a core-need for the large number of restaurant workers in the US that speak Spanish.
Why does Spanish-language software matter for restaurant teams?
Restaurant teams in the U.S. have worked in English and Spanish for decades, but most of their software still runs in one language. Among restaurant and foodservice employees, 21% speak Spanish at home, compared with 15% of the total U.S. employed labor force, according to the National Restaurant Association’s employee demographics data brief. Ownership reflects it too: 18% of U.S. restaurant firms are Hispanic-owned, a higher share than in the private sector overall, per National Restaurant Association analysis of Census data. SpotOn En Español gives those teams a POS platform that works in both languages.
“We love the Spanish language experience,” said Diego Pantoja of El Molcajete, a family-owned Mexican restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware. “It has made the system easier and more efficient for our team to use, especially for our employees who are more comfortable working in Spanish.”
How does SpotOn En Español work?
SpotOn sets language at three levels.
- Timeclock: each employee picks a language after entering their PIN. The device remembers, and no one else on that device is affected.
- POS and KDS: each POS station and KDS monitor is set at the device level and can be toggled between languages.
- Dashboard (back office): each user sets a language at signup, and it carries over to the mobile app. Reports, settings, and alerts switch with a toggle.
Because each KDS monitor and printer is set separately, the grill can read tickets and printed chits in Spanish while the expo reads in English. A Spanish-speaking line cook and an English-speaking manager can work the same order without having to translate in their head.
“Restaurants are run by teams that already work in two languages, so we felt strongly that the software should run that way too,” said Bryan Solar, SpotOn Chief Product Officer. “We went through a full shift, from clock-in to the kitchen line to the back office, and put the setting where each person can use the product in the language they feel most comfortable in: with the employee, the device, and the user.”
How does SpotOn En Español compare with other restaurant POS platforms?
SpotOn en Español is the most comprehensive in-product Spanish-language offering for restaurant staff in the U.S.* SpotOn builds its translations natively into the product. Toast’s support center points users to Chrome’s translate feature for Toast web pages and warns that some words may be “directly translated.” Of the platforms reviewed, none documents a comparable per-employee language setting at the timeclock.
Who supports SpotOn En Español clients in Spanish?
Spanish is part of SpotOn’s service model, from the first sales call to install and ongoing support.
- 80+ bilingual sales reps and specialists, from first call to signed proposal.
- 45+ onboarding, menu, and install specialists who build menus and install hardware in Spanish.
- Spanish phone support from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central every day, with English support available 24/7.
- Spanish-speaking customer success and underwriting specialists.
“Restaurants deserve a POS platform built around how their teams work,” said Matt Hyman, co-founder and co-CEO at SpotOn. “Our product team has made that possible, and our bilingual sales reps, onboarding specialists, and support team deliver on it from the first call to the first shift, the way it should be.”
