Alexandria is a library where AI agents reach official data providers, specialized indexes, and the live web. The people who supply that knowledge get paid.

San Francisco, CA September 22, 2026 –(PR.com)– Firecrawl today launched Alexandria, a library that gives AI agents access to official data providers, Firecrawl’s own indexes, and the live web through a single interface. The company also announced a $75 million Series B led by Smash Capital, with participation from Altos Ventures, Nexus Venture Partners, Y Combinator, Freestyle, and Offline Ventures. Firecrawl will use the funding to expand Alexandria’s coverage and pay the researchers, publishers, and data providers who contribute to it.

AI agents can search the open web. Many useful sources require separate integrations, and much of the most useful knowledge is outside the open web. An agent researching a company can read its website, but financial data, filings, and specialized datasets each sit behind a separate API with its own pricing and format. Developers have to build and maintain those integrations or leave useful sources out, limiting what an agent can learn and the answers it can give.

Alexandria gives agents a common way to discover sources, understand what each one provides, and retrieve information through the Firecrawl API. The library includes:

Official data providers, accessed under paid agreements

Firecrawl’s Research Index, spanning tens of millions of scientific paper abstracts

Firecrawl’s Developer Index, spanning tens of millions of primary sources across documentation, READMEs, issues, and merged pull requests

Firecrawl’s Government Index, covering laws, regulations, and ordinances

Site-specific connectors for accessing specific information or entire datasets directly from websites

The live web, reachable through Firecrawl’s search and scrape primitives

New indexes and sources continue to expand what agents can access through Alexandria.

Internal evaluations across different verticals show that agents using Alexandria score 21 percent higher on answer quality than those using built-in web tools.

“We’re building a library for the world’s knowledge,” said Caleb Peffer, co-founder and CEO of Firecrawl. “People have licensed data for training, but almost no one gets paid when an AI agent actually uses what they know. We want people and organizations to earn from the data they have, while helping AI agents solve problems they couldn’t solve before.”

Through individual agreements, Firecrawl already pays official providers such as Wikimedia Enterprise for direct access to their data. Millions of requests for Wikipedia data flow through the service each month.

Building on those agreements, Firecrawl plans to open a self-service system soon so individuals, content creators and organizations can contribute knowledge and get paid based on demand from AI agents.

With the new funding, Firecrawl will expand Alexandria on three fronts: deeper indexes and retrieval systems, direct connections to more first-party sources, and the payment infrastructure that lets contributors share in the value their knowledge creates. Over time, this system could also help people earn from expertise they have never shared online.

“Over 1.5 million users build with Firecrawl because it solves a problem everyone working with AI runs into,” said Brad Twohig, Founder and Partner at Smash Capital. “Caleb and his team have a rare ability to see what is needed next and build it. That’s why we’re backing them to build Alexandria.”

Alexandria is available today through Firecrawl’s MCP, CLI and API. Get started at firecrawl.dev/alexandria. Data providers and individuals interested in contributing can apply at firecrawl.dev/alexandria.
